Archaeological Sites of Athens
(visit • information • review)
Stoa of Attalos:

✍️ The Stoa of Attalos is located in the archaeological site of the Ancient Agora of Athens, on the opposite side of the Temple of Hephaestus, thus forming its eastern boundary.

According to a Greek inscription in the column of the lower colonnade, which is kept fragmentary: "ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ ΑΤΤΑΛΟΣ ΑΤΤΑΛΟΥ ΚΑΙ ΒΑΣΙΛΙΣΣΗΣ ΑΠΟΛΛΩΝΙΔΟΣ" this stoa was constructed and presented as a gift by the king (of Pergamos) Attalos II (159-138 BC) to the ancient city of Athens.

The Stoa of Attalos was for the Athenians a meeting place, a promenade and a great commercial center of the time.

The Stoa of Attalus was destroyed by Erulus in 267 AD and was incorporated into the Late Roman Wall of Athens and its restoration was carried out (between 1953 and 1956) by the American School of Classical Studies, based on the studies of the architect Ioannis Traylos and thanks to the donation of the American anthropologist - with strong charity - John D. Rockefeller Jr.

Today it operates as a (visiting) museum.

The Stoa of Attalos is located in the same place as:
◉ The ancient market of Athens,
◉ The Temple of Hephaestus.

Lily's tips:

✍️ The Stoa of Attalos is located within the archaeological site of the Ancient Agora (market) of Athens.

The route is mild, but you'll need comfortable shoes and there are stairs on the site you will have to climp.

You can not reach the ancient Athenian market and the Stoa of Attalos from the small park that is in front of Thissio Station, as it is fenced with railing and the reason for that - beyond the issue of protecting it from possible vandalism - is because the area of the Ancient Athenian Market has an entrance ticket.
