Waymo began as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009.
Waymo’s mission is to make it safe and easy for people and things to get where they’re going.
The Waymo Driver can improve the world's access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to car crashes.
It actually implements a scenario that - a few years ago - only existed in science fiction movies, being able to drive a vehicle without leaning on the steering wheel while sitting in the back seat - if you wish.
But how far has Waymo technology come in 2020?
All citizens in Phoenix, Arizona (U.S.A.) officially from October 8 (2020) have the opportunity to call a taxi cab (without any driver in) to take them to their destination, through the pilot application Waymo One.
However, although the disappearance of the safety driver is an important step in making the service profitable, Waymo clarifies that there will be remote supervisors who will be checking and advising on closed roads and alternative routes.
A Waymo spokesman said that before the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic (March 2020) there were 1,000 - 2,000 trips per week, 5-10% of which were driverless and is expected to return to around 100 autonomous routes per week before the end of the year in order to further develop.
