✍️ Serifos is the beautiful island of the western Cyclades you should pay a visit, especially if you are not a big fan of the touristic and bustling greek islands of Mykonos, Paros or Santorini.

Ideally (as in any new travel destination) you would have to visit Serifos if you know a native or local who knows exactly how to guide you around (otherwise you have me, don't worry).

◉ Serifos is a popular Greek destination - nowadays - among travelers who are looking to experience something different on their holidays, with alternations in rocky landscapes and beautiful beaches, but also with a very picturesque mainland, overlooking the island's harbor from high above and offering a wonderful view of the Aegean Sea.

• When is better to visit Serifos island?


The best period to visit Serifos is ✔ BETWEEN JUNE AND EARLY SEPTEMBER because the beautiful Greek island of Serifos is not very touristic and in these months you will enjoy better touristic services in local transports and other quality services offered by most tourist shops on the island as well as in some organized beaches of Serifos.

On the other hand - even if you consider yourself as an "Alternative Traveler" - but your vacation is in August, of course it‘s still a good idea to visit Serifos as long as you have booked a rental room or hotel to stay in ahead your travel period (you will not easily find a budget deal with last minute’s reservations or maybe you won’t find a room to stay at all).

Also it’s essential to have (or to rent) your own transport vehicle so that (whenever you feel like) you can find yourself isolated on a more inaccessible beach or in a less tourist area and rest your head from the hustle and bustle of the crowd you will meet that specific summer period.



• Beaches of Serifos:


They say that this Greek island has more than 72 beaches, not all of them easily accessible.
To reach them all you'll probably need a yacht (just saying)
Still - even with no yacht or any other kind of boat at all - there are many others beaches to visit and enjoy swimming in.

In every season (in the summertime mind the strong local winds known in Greece as the Aegean's Meltemia) you will find in Serifos, many beautiful beaches to swim even if not all of them are organized with sun beds and umbrellas.

The waters are usually crystal clear and only during the end of July until the end of August you have to watch out when you will go where and at what time you will visit each beach for swimming if you want to avoid the touristic crowds.

Among the most famous and beautiful beaches with access from the land (on foot or by car) are:


✔ ABESALOS beach: Is about 11 kilometers from the mainland or Chora of Serifos.
This beach is a large one, quiet with pebbles and clear waters.
Road access is available but you must cross a dirt road to reach the beach.

✔ AGIOS SOSTIS beach: Is 7km away from the mainland or Chora of Serifos, with a small rough dirt road just before (better to leave the car and walk to the beach) and with the homonymous chapel overlooking the blue waters, with golden sand and lots of shadows from the trees.
The beach is not an organized one so it's a good idea that you have been supplied yourself ahead with water and all the other things you might need.

✔ Ai GIANNIS beach: This beach is about 8 km from the mainland or Chora of Serifos; is sandy with small pebbles (on the right side has rocks) and it has also shady trees and the waters go deep fast.

✔ VAGIA beach: Distance about 11 km from the mainland or Chora of Serifos (also the access to that beach requires to cross a dirt road first), it has blue waters, a long sandy beach with thick sand and colorful pebbles (avoided the right part of the beach because it has a cement slab in the sea), has a spotless sea bottom and there is no any natural shade, only some straw umbrellas to lie under.
From this beach you can enjoy a great sunset.

✔ GANEMA beach: This beach is one of the largest beaches of Serifos.
It's 11.5 km from Chora and is located quite close to Vagia and Koutalas beach.
Ganema beach has plenty of shade trees, is has both white pebbles and small rocks and you will definitely find one or two small shops for coffee, drink and food after your swim.

✔ KOUTALAS beach: A large beach located about 12.5 km away from the Chora of Serifos, is sandy (mostly to the right side of the beach) and has many shady trees.

✔ SIKAMIA beach: This beach is located 10km away from the mainland or Chora of Serifos and has a long sandy beach, blue water, many shade trees, small shops to buy water or coffee, beverages and food and a beautiful sunset.
Just don't go to this beach when Meltemia winds are on.

✔ PSILI AMMOS beach: It's located about 8 kilometers from Serifos Chora, it offers a golden sandy beach with lots of natural shade from the trees on the beach, shallow blue waters, is ideal for families with children and is considered as one of the best beaches of Serifos.
For this reason you will always find a lot of visitors (in August probably you will not find parking easily) and it's almost impossible not to find people playing noisy rackets under the hot sun or in the shade.
Avoid visiting this beach if there is a strong north wind - meltemia - in the island.
You can't imagine how the sand (because of the wind) can pierce your body.

✔ Other beaches of Serifos are:
The beach of Skala, Platys Gialos, Maliadikos beach, Mega Livadi, Lia beach, Livadakia, Karavi, Kalogeros and Karavas, Avlomonas beach, Aspros Kavos and Alevrakia.




• Where to stay in Serifos?


If you have your own car better to stay ✔ in the picturesque mainland or Chora of Serifos, beneath the Serifo's castle with its beautiful view and the small taverns; otherwise prefer to rent a room somewhere ✔ close to the port of Serifos - also know as Livadi village, from where you can have easier access to the local transport and many nightlife options at your feet.

You will find lots of available Hotels and rooms in Serifos and in good rate offers (check prices here) just make sure you'll make your reservation in time.






• Traditional Local Products of Serifos:


While you are on the island try all the traditional delicacies of the island that are usually served everywhere and at good prices.
Among the most famous traditional dishes of Serifos are the Marathokeftedes, the Revythada on the oven with rosemary, the Lousa (spicy meat starter)
As traditional local products, try caper, local wine, xinomyzithra cheese, Serifiotika sausages, local honey pastels and Serifos' unique goat cheese.



• Where to eat and drink in Serifos:


Where to eat and drink in Serifos - as in any other tourist destination - is always subjective and according to the tastes of each visitor.

But I can tell you where I had a good time and from that point you make your own decisions.

• At the seaside tavern of Maria called Cyclopas, overlooking the picturesque bay of Megalo Livadi: Try the fresh fish and wonderful Serifos - traditional flavors, with local raw materials - at a good price.

• For rakomela in Stratos (or at the "French" as the locals call him) accompanied by delicious small local appetizers.

• For a cocktail at the Aerino Bar, in Serifos Chora, always with atmospheric music, a lovely interior bar and a small terrace (if you go with meltemia - take a long-sleeved blouse with you or a jacket).



• What else can do while you are in Serifos?


✔ Climb to the castle of Serifos Chora from the stairway and admire the magnificent view of the Aegean Sea or a romantic sunset.
This climb, of course, requires comfortable shoes and good physical condition.

✔ Visit the mining museum (of Serifos - above the bay of Megalo Livadi) listen to the unique stories of the island from the old miners and feel the authentic vibes of Serifos history.

Follow the natural seaside route through Megalo Livadi and walk over these rusty remnants of the mining museum, lying among green fields and hills rich in wildflowers.

At some point, the path will lead you to the real caves of the island, as well as to the hot water springs running over the rocks.

Tip: Don't explore these caves on your own - as tempting as it may seem in the little explorer you hide within yourself.
There are no signs of guidance anywhere and it is very easy to get lost inside the caves.
Also avoid the same route while approaching the sunset hour.


✔ To visit the mythical throne of Cyclops (located in the Kavos of Cyclops of Serifos - above the bay of Megalo Livadi area) and admire the panoramic view of the southwest side of the island.
It is characterized as The throne of Cyclops because of the seven cobbled giant boulders in the area who seem to form a throne, which the legend said belonged to one of the Cyclops that lived and reigned there.




• How can I go to Serifos?


✔ There are ferry boats leaving the port of Piraeus (close to Athens Greece) in the direction of Serifos or with Serifos as a stopover.
Travel time varies from 2 hours to 5 hours depending on the ship you choose.

The routes to and from Serifos are increasing during the summer months, but after the tourist season they are diluted dramatically.

Serifos is connected by boat to many Cycladic islands (Ios, Kimolos, Mykonos, Tinos, Paros, Naxos, Andros, Folegandros, Amorgos, Anafi, Syros), and Crete via Milos island.

The island does not have its own airport.
The nearest airports in Serifos are those of Milos and Paros island, from where you can then reach Serifos island by ferry.
