Cabo da Roca (Cape Roca)
The westernmost point of Europe
Cabo da Roca • Portugal

✍️ Cabo da Roca (Cape Roca, also known as: Cabo de la Roca) is the cape located on the western edge of Europe, just outside of Sintra in Portugal (near to Lisbon if you want to arrange a day trip and not far from Cascais).
A cross has been erected close to the cape as a monument to celebrate the western end of the European mainland and the easter beginning of the ocean.

It's an open area, free to visit (no ticket charge applied anywhere on this spot) and has spectacular views of both the Atlantic ocean and the Serra de Sintra.

◉ This cape is well known for its wild beauty as it is washed by the Atlantic Ocean (which affects the weather pretty much and makes it quite variable) and there is also a column - monument dedicated to the Portuguese poet - Luís de Camões - which bears the famous words:

"Aqui, onde a terra se acaba e o mar começa"
[Here the land ends and the sea begins] ~ Luís de Camões

In addition to the lighthouse and Camões' stone memorial, there is also a souvenir gift shop in the spot where you can buy small souvenirs from the cape and a kind of diploma that proves you've reached the western edge of Europe.

For Cape's visitors coming to the end of the day, it is worth staying to enjoy the sunset but be sure to leave in time as the area is not sufficiently illuminated in the night.

Lily's tips:

What will you see on cape Cabo da Roca?

The Cape of Cabo da Roca and the touristic area around is a very beautiful but still a quite wild landscape (as the unpredictable weather of the Atlantic Ocean effects the area), which hides some travel secrets you should notice in time in order not to become tourist trappings:

The monument:

• What does the Monument to Cabo da Roca means?

Historical evidence shows that there was a fortress in Cabo da Roca in the 17th century, which played an important role in protecting the entrance to the port of Lisbon, forming a defensive line along the coast, especially during the terrestrial wars.

Today there are only traces, as well as the lighthouse that remains an important point for navigation.

The monument built in honor of Luís de Camões Cavo de la Roca (Cabo de la Roca για for the Portuguese) aised in a cross to the sky, isn't a really impressive monument from an architectonical point of view, but the region where this is is characteristic of the wild beauty of Portugal, which is largely due to its interaction with the Atlantic Ocean.

Photos:

• Where will you take the best photos for Instagram?

Do not just stay where the Cabo Da Roca monument is located.
Usually there is a lot of people waiting in a queue for a photo in front of the cross monument and besides this photo, doesn't really have many more things to offer you.

Carefully descend to the lighthouse (looking at the Atlantic Ocean) to capture amazing images of the waves that break into the steep but beautiful carved rocks.

For more incredibly images you will also love the sunset hour - if it's not to cloudy the day of your visit.

Also - as I mentioned earlier - at the gift shop that is located in the area of the monument, if you want (it costs about €11 per person) you can buy a certificate (diploma) that will confirm your presence at the westernmost end of Europe.

Attention is needed:

• What should you watch out while you are there?

Take care of your personal belongings and keep them safe.

Cabo da Roca is now considered as a quite touristic place to visit and last time there have been some victims with ecstatic tourists who while they were admiring the landscape they become poorer in materials.

Especially at sunset, where Cabo da Roca is flooded with tourists, the pickpockets do some real business.
Remember, your lack of attention means vulnerability.

Also remember not to leave the safe paths and reach close to the wild clifs for a photo. People have already killed trying to capture a better view to the ocean.

The weather at Cabo da Roca:

• Is it unpredictable? How should you get dressed?

The truth is that the weather in Campo da Rocca is unpredictable.
The Atlantic ocean creates a small climate on its own in the area, which affects the weather conditions you will find once you visit it.
Thus, e.g. while you may have left Lisbon in sunshine, as soon as you reach the cape, you might meet a totally different weather from heavy cloudy to rainy, also very windy and cold and as soon as you get away from the cape the sun might will shine bright again.

However, it is worth at least a visit to every season (remember - however - that it will always be colder there from the nearest parts of Portugal and dress accordingly.

Location:

• Where is it; How do you get there?

Campo da Rocca is about 40 minutes drive from Lisbon while it is about halfway from Sintra to Cascais.

- Should I go to Cabo de la Roca?
- Undoubtedly you should go.

• Summing up on the Cabo Da Roca in Portugal:

Wild landscape overlooking the steep cliffs over the Atlantic Ocean and the weather, but a landscape worth seeing and a place you should be visiting - on your first trip to Portugal Lisbon - as it marks that you have traveled to the southernmost point of the European continent.

The rocks in Cabo da Roca are more than 100 meters high, while the various rocks in the area are of rich geological importance and the lighthouse next to the cape dates back to the 18th century.
