Positano | Italy
(Travel and tourist guide for your visit in Positano village on the Italian coast of Amalfi)
Travel to Positano

Basic information about Positano, Italy:

The beautiful and picturesque Positano village is located on the Amalfi Coast of Italy (Salerno Province), in Campania, Italy, near Naples.

It is said to have been named in honor of the god of the sea Poseidon, a name given to it by ancient Greeks and Phoenicians living in the area.

But apart from the ancient Greeks and Phoenicians, in ancient times it was also highly esteemed by wealthy Romans, who loved to build impressive holiday villas in Positano, one of which is under the church of Santa Maria Assunta and has recently opened for visit to the public.

Due to the mild temperatures and the beauty of the landscape, Positano has been a favorite holiday resort from the Roman Empire to the present day, with many tourists flocking to this seaside destination every year, both to photograph its amphitheatrically settlements as well as to rest in front of the sea, with a breeze somewhat expensive for the average tourist but quite cosmopolitan for every visitor.

Old Positano Italy
Historical information:

Positano was a commercial port of the Republic of Amalfi in medieval times which prospered during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

By the mid-nineteenth century, however, the city had fallen on hard times. More than half of the population migrated, mainly to America.
By the middle of the twentieth century it had already become a poor fishing village. The golden tourist season for Positano began in the 1950s.

Visit Positano
The best way to visit Positano while traveling alone or not

Lily's tips:

How to go to Positano:

Did you know that:

The best and fastest way to travel to Positano is by getting there from Naples airport.
The distance between Naples airport and Positano is 65 km. and (by car) the journey takes about 80 minutes. If you are thinking of going there by TAXI, you would rather book it before your arrival, as some of the TAXIs you will find at the airport on the same route will be charged almost double.

If you still prefer to reach Positano more economically (using public transportation such as train and local buses) you will need to stop in Sorrento.

In the winter months the itineraries are less crowded but less frequent than in the summer months or high tourist season - though more often, they are usually really crowded.

That's why you need to take care on time of your access to your tickets (on the go and on return) in a timely manner.

From and to Positano, too, there are ferry boats on the Positano-Capri route. What do you think; Is it a good idea for a day trip or a two-day visit?

It is also very important before you arrange on any trip (except that private cars are not allowed to go down to the beach in the summer season) that unfortunately Positano and its amphitheatrical architecture are mostly unsuitable for people with a small baby in a stroller , with movement problems and a wheelchair.

When to visit Positano:

The most touristy months - to avoid the crowds - if you are thinking of visiting Positano - are the months of April, May and September.

The weather is usually good (the climate is warm Mediterranean with humidity and sometimes rain) and you will have plenty of time and space for amazing souvenirs for your personal album or social media.

If you are thinking of visiting Positano as a day trip from a nearby city or region, keep in mind of course that the most crowded days (gathering the most people) are the weekend, the official Italian holidays and all the sunny days in general.

Positano Beaches:

The most famous beaches of Positano are “Spiaggia Grande”, “Spiaggia Fornillo” beach which is a 5-10 minute walk along the “Great Beach”, La Porta beach (Spiaggia La Porta), Fiumicello beach (Spiaggia Fiumicello), Arienzo beach (Spiaggia Arienzo), the beach of St. Peter (Spiaggia San Pietro), the “Spiaggia Laurito” and the beach of Remi (Spiaggia Remmese), some of which are also accessible on boat by sea.

Where will you stay in Positano?

Looking for a budget stay in Positano?

The choices are not infinite and the prices of the accommodations (rooms or hotels) you will find here are certainly affected by availability and therefore by the time you visit them.

Below are some helpful travel tips and useful suggestions you could consider before booking your stay:

For the cheapest accommodation:

Unfortunately if you are looking for a cheap stay (with the interpretation of the term "economic") in the center of Positano, you will be disappointed.

Especially if you are looking for a last minute booking. But if you take care of it on time (and when I say on time I mean at least 6-8 months in advance) you can find the low season, nightly rooms at 83 euros per night/double room which you still say not cheap but definitely much cheaper than others accommodation options you will find.

In fact, I am referring to a room at Villa Maria Antonietta which, however, because it has already become known and especially loved by travelers looking for the cheapest accommodation in Pozitano - if you are already interested - in order to make a reservation there, you must book quite early on time.

Also accommodations such as La Sorgente Del Sole, or the Villa Palumbo at € 78-85 per night / double room followed by Hotel Bougainville with double bed rates starting at € 130 per night at the end of March.

Even in the month of April or May, a single night in a hotel room costs (in economic search) about 220 to 260 euros per night for a double room.

And though we are referring to overnight stays at La Tavolozza Residence, at the Villa Flavio Gioia or in a comfortable room at Positano Suite, it still isn't an overnight stay for example at the luxurious Hotel Villa Franca, the five star Hoel Le Sirenuse or at the Il San Pietro di Positano with a private beach of and a Michelin star in its award-winning restaurant and the lowest booking price of 650 euros / night.

If you trust Booking.com and want to book one of the above rooms and hotels in the heart of Positano, you can find more budget deals here

Otherwise - the tip they won't give you in any another travel guide:
If you enjoy the risk, you can get better rates on most Positano hotels at Hotels.com

What to see and do in Positano:

• Visit the church of Santa Maria Assunta:

The highlight of Positano is undoubtedly the church of Santa Maria Assunta, with its beautiful Moorish dome. Inside the altar are Byzantine treasures dating from the 13th century, including the Virgin Mary of Santa Maria Assunta.
Believing in God or not, this historic church is worth a visit and it will also offer spectacular souvenir photos for your photo album or the Social Medias.

• Buy that Limoncello bottle:

For the uninitiated, Limoncello is a digestive drink made with lemon and sugar.
The highly aromatic alcohol in the mixture is mixed with sugar and juice from the lemon and bottled.
When you look at the sizes of lemons that the neighboring Sorrento village of Positano is famous for in the markets and smell their scent, you will surely understand why this drink is so popular in this part of Italy.

• Visit famous bars for coffee, drinks, cocktails and their view

Buca di Bacco Bar:
Casual bar right on Positano's main beach.
In the morning you can drink coffee or have a light breakfast, and during the day you can reduce your hunger with a pizza and a glass of wine.
Compared to other entertainment shops in the center of Positano, it is considered quite affordable and is located in a very good spot (on Positano's main beach).

Visit Africana Famous Club:
Built in a cave, Africana is one of the hottest destinations if you are looking for a unique time at Positano.
Although Africana plays mainly African-style music, sometimes plays the latest hits also, filling its room with even more happy customers.
It hosts several music events, playing different kinds of music to a diverse audience of travelers.
Great international artists have also made special appearances at the club, including Tom Boxer, Nicola Fasano and members of royal families.

Franco's Bar:
A renowned loft-style bar overlooking the sea, Franco's Bar is a - relatively pricey - cocktail and drink shop, suitable for friends, couples in love and families too.
Offering an old-fashioned menu of cocktails, spirits and bubbles, it is decorated with a unique collection of artworks, including an impressive neo-baroque fountain inspired by an artist's sketch, a pair of sea-inspired lampshades and a seaside view.
At this bar there is usually a crowd that has gone there to observe other well dressed people and they want to make a good impression of themselves too so if you want to feel more comfortable, pay attention to your outfit a little more before you visit this place.

At the Hotel Poseidon's Bar:
Situated on the rooftop of the famous Il Tridente bar of Positano's (pricey) Hotel Poseidon you can enjoy a drink or two or have your diner on a backdrop of one of the best views of the village, with lounge music and very good service.
The vibes of this spot our quite friendly and along with the colors of the sunset are magical, as is its atmosphere (opening hours from 09:00 until 01:00 a.m.).

• Taste the local cuisine:

You will find plenty of places to eat in Positano, not very cheap thought but good.
For local cuisine visit:

The Il Ritrovo (you can go with the special bus they are offering) with a delicious menu of pizza and seafood,
The La Tagliata with magnificent views, prix fixe menus in Italian and Mediterranean cuisine, also suitable for vegan,
The historic Chez Black Restaurant on Positano's main beach, offering a rich seafood menu since 1949, usually open and off season,
The Ristorante Max where local people cooking and offering paid cooking lessons too,
The award-winning Da Vincenzo with great mussels, great views and a queue if you haven't booked in time.

• Stay fit:

If you love exercise and sports like hiking or just walking a lot, Positano is definitely the right choise for you.
In addition to the countless steps and uphill - downhills that you will have to climb up and down to get there, there are some beautiful hiking trails such as the famed Path of the Gods trail that we believe will take your breath away with its beautiful, panoramic views (and not with its moderate degree of difficulty).

• Take the boat to Capri:

From April to October, small ferry boats depart from Positano to Capri, giving you a chance to meet this renowned cosmopolitan Italian destination and its famous "Blue Cave" (Blue Grotto).

• Take other day trips from Positano:

We do not recommend renting a car or vespa - as they will tell you elsewhere - unless you are extremely careful and familiar with the roads around as well as with the Italian way of driving.

SITA buses, you can visit both the beautiful mountainous and other seaside villages of the Amalfi Coast , also visit Sorrento.

From Positano, with the local SITA buses, you can visit both the beautiful mountainous villages (such as the famous Ravello where the well-known is organized Ravello Festival) as well as the rest of the seaside villages of Amalfi and visit the beautiful Sorrento village, the historical Herculaneum, the Pompeii site and the city of Napoli.

• Summarizing your trip to Positano:

The star village of the Amalfi Coast, the photogenic Positano, though a bit pricey in its high season - at least for the average European tourist - is well worth the time and the money you'll spend on it.

But if there is "no money no honey darling" but you still want to visit Positano (and why not - You deserve it!) you can always go for a day trip or for a weekend out there from the beautiful city of Naples or the nearby Sorrento village.

If you are a woman remember that high heels probably won't make you feel comfortable in the narrow streets of the village or on its many steps and regardless of your gender, mind that if you live near the sea and off the road, you will probably need to bring your suitcase up and down on the same paved path with the many stairs along, so I suggest traveling light or at least take your butler with you.

Finally read carefully everything I suggest you should know above, send me your comments or questions if you like here, and with an upbeat mood, avoid the heavy summertime for your visit (and with it you will also avoid excessive humidity mostly at night, mosquitoes and other unpleasant bugs) and get ready for a very - very beautiful trip to Positano, a life-long experience, that will be an unforgettable one.
